The Delhi High Court has taken a strict stance against traffic congestion and overcrowding outside the Anand Vihar Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). A bench comprising Justice Pratibha M. Singh and Justice Madhu Jain has ordered the immediate removal of unauthorized street vendors from the area. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) must serve notices by January 30, and the forced removal drive is set to begin on January 31, 2026.

Only 105 Vendors Permitted

The court has clarified that not all vendors will be removed. A specific list of 105 vendors, who were identified by the Town Vending Committee (TVC) and possess a provisional Certificate of Vending, will be allowed to stay. However, strict conditions apply to them as well.

  • No Permanent Structures: Even authorized vendors cannot build fixed shops. They must operate only from mobile carts.
  • Immediate Action: Any permanent structure found on pavements will be demolished or seized.
  • Non-Hawking Zones: Foot-over bridges and main roads are declared strictly off-limits for hawking.

Redevelopment and New Facilities

The court emphasized that Anand Vihar is a critical transit hub connecting the Metro, Railways, and Bus Terminal, and it cannot be allowed to turn into a chaotic marketplace. The MCD and Public Works Department (PWD) have been directed to submit a beautification plan by March 10. This plan will include designated pick-up and drop-off lanes for autos and cabs to ensure smooth traffic flow. New sanitation facilities and clear walkways will also be constructed for the convenience of travelers.
