The Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Department conducted major raids on Thursday, January 29, 2026, targeting Gagan Singh, an assistant clerk in the Food and Supply Department. An eight-member team from Gorakhpur carried out simultaneous searches at four different locations in Bihar and Jharkhand. The officials took this step after finding evidence that Singh possessed assets 300% greater than his known sources of income.

What Did the Officials Find During the Raid?

The investigation team searched properties in Banka, Bhagalpur, and Deoghar. During the search, they recovered significant documents related to land and expensive plots. The team also found investment bonds worth lakhs of rupees, along with a large amount of cash and jewelry.

In Bhagalpur, officials examined a flat in Utsav Apartment, which is registered in the name of Gagan Singh’s wife, Neetu Singh. Bank details and land registry papers were also seized from his ancestral home in Gulani village. The valuation of all movable and immovable items is currently ongoing to prepare a final report.

Why Was This Action Taken Against the Clerk?

The action follows a complaint filed in 2022 by Raman Singh, a fellow villager who noticed the clerk’s sudden increase in wealth. Gagan Singh, who had been posted in Mau district since 1992, was transferred to Lalitpur in May 2025 following corruption allegations.

Despite receiving several notices from the vigilance department to explain his assets, he failed to provide a satisfactory answer. The officials noted that he had suppressed income and assets not disclosed in mandatory government filings. His family members were questioned during the raids as he was not present at the location.
