A massive protest took place in Patna today as thousands of students and women activists hit the streets. The march was organized by AISA and AIPWA to demand justice for a NEET student who died under suspicious circumstances. The situation became tense when the protesters broke through police barricades at JP Golambar. The administration has deployed a heavy police force to control the crowd.

What happened during the Vidhan Sabha March?
The protest started from Gandhi Maidan in the morning with thousands of workers joining the ‘Nyay Yatra’. The police had set up heavy barricading near JP Golambar to stop the crowd from moving towards the Assembly. However, the angry protesters broke these barriers and advanced towards Dakbungalow Chowk. There were reports of scuffles between the police and the students at the intersection. The police also warned of using water cannons to disperse the mob.
Why are students protesting in Bihar?
This anger stems from the death of an 18-year-old student living in Shambhu Girls Hostel in Patna. She was found unconscious on January 6 and passed away on January 11. While police initially treated it as a suicide, the FSL report found traces of semen on her clothes and injury marks on her body. This raised strong suspicions of gang rape and murder. Following public pressure, the Bihar government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the case.
What action has been taken so far?
The government has taken strict action against local police officials for negligence. Three police personnel, including the station in-charge of Chitragupta Nagar, have been suspended. The protesters are demanding a Supreme Court-monitored probe and capital punishment for the culprits. The victim’s parents also staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi yesterday, warning of extreme steps if justice is not served.
