A tragic incident has occurred in the Rohini area of Delhi where a 32-year-old man lost his life after falling into an open manhole. The victim, identified as Birju Kumar Rai, was a daily wage labourer. The accident happened on Monday night, but the police were informed only on Tuesday afternoon. A rescue operation was launched by the agencies, and the body was recovered late at night. The police have started an investigation into this matter.
How did the accident happen?
Police investigation revealed that Birju Kumar Rai was with his friend Budhan Das on Monday evening. They were sitting near a vacant DDA plot and had consumed alcohol. Around 7:30 PM, Birju fell into the uncovered manhole. His friend Budhan admitted that he was too drunk at that time to help or call anyone. He went home and slept, and only informed another friend the next day, who then called the police control room.
What action is being taken?
The Begumpur Police Station has registered an FIR regarding this incident. The case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections for causing death by negligence and creating danger in a public way. The police are verifying who was responsible for leaving the manhole open on the DDA plot. CCTV footage from the nearby area is being checked, and the open pit has now been covered to stop any more accidents.
