The Gurgaon police have arrested two individuals for allegedly cheating a man by promising him a job through a “gigolo service” advertisement on Facebook. The arrests took place in Manesar on Friday following a complaint filed last year. The victim reportedly lost over ₹40,000 after falling into the trap set by the scammers online.

How did the scammers target the victim?

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Priyanshu Dewan, criminals often monitor search trends to find their targets. The victim in this case had searched for gigolo services on the internet. Based on this history, he started seeing targeted advertisements on his Facebook feed.

When the victim clicked on the ad and contacted the number provided, the accused asked him to deposit money. They claimed these payments were for registration and membership fees. Trusting the ad, the victim transferred the amount but never received the promised service or his money back.

Who are the accused in this case?

The Cyber Crime (East) police team identified and arrested two men involved in the fraud. The details of the accused are as follows:

  • Deshraj (35): A taxi driver from Kho village, Gurugram. He allegedly sold the SIM card used for the fraud for ₹1,500.
  • Arjun Singh: A private company employee from Bharatpur, Rajasthan. He sold his bank account for ₹3,000 to facilitate the transactions.

Police investigations revealed that the mobile number used to contact the victim was registered in Deshraj’s name, while the money was transferred to Arjun Singh’s account.

What is the current status of the investigation?

The police are currently interrogating the accused to find out if there are more people involved in this racket. The bank account used in this scam has also been flagged for other suspicious transactions in the police system.

Officials are examining if this gang has duped other individuals using similar methods. This case serves as a warning for social media users to be careful about unverified ads and requests for money online.
