The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has taken a major step towards cleaner air with the inauguration of a new Anti-Smog Fogger System. Launched on February 14, 2026, this initiative involves the installation of 120 mist guns across the airport premises to combat dust and pollution. Member of Parliament Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and MLA Kailash Gahlot were present during the ceremony to mark this operational milestone.
How will this system improve air quality?
The primary goal of these mist guns is to bind water droplets with airborne dust particles, causing them to settle down on the ground. This process helps in reducing local haze and substantially improves visibility, which is crucial for smooth airport operations. This move comes at a critical time as recent reports indicated AQI levels at the airport ranging between 224 and 294.
By suppressing dust, the system aims to provide a cleaner environment for passengers in high-footfall terminal areas. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to handle dust mitigation effectively within the airport complex.
Future plans and expansion details
While 120 units are currently operational, the government has announced a vision to scale this system significantly. The plan involves installing up to 600 poles throughout the airport and surrounding traffic corridors to further suppress particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10.
This effort aligns with the Delhi Action Plan 2026, which targets a 15% reduction in the city’s annual average AQI. Officials have appreciated the GMR Group for their proactive role in implementing these measures to ensure a safe and clean Delhi.
