The Indian passport has significantly improved its global standing, climbing to the 75th position in the latest Henley Passport Index released in February 2026. This marks a notable jump from the 85th spot recorded last year and the 80th position held just last month in January. Indian passport holders can now access 56 destinations either visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival facility, making international travel slightly easier for tourists and business professionals.
What Has Changed in the Travel List?
The recent improvement in ranking is largely attributed to relative changes in the global index, as other nations experienced a steeper drop in their mobility scores. This month, The Gambia was added back to the list of accessible countries for Indians, increasing the total count from 55 in January to 56. Indian citizens can enter The Gambia visa-free for up to 90 days with a valid passport and return ticket.
However, travelers must be aware of specific losses compared to previous years. Iran suspended its visa-free entry for Indians in late 2025 due to security concerns and now requires a prior visa. Similarly, Bolivia shifted to an e-visa system that needs prior approval, removing it from the visa-free category. Despite having one less destination than in 2025, India’s rank surged because peer nations faced bigger hurdles.
Global and Regional Ranking Status
India currently shares the 75th rank with Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Madagascar, and Mauritania. On the global stage, Singapore retains the top spot with access to 192 destinations. Regionally, India continues to hold a stronger position compared to its neighbors.
| Country | Current Rank |
|---|---|
| Singapore | 1st |
| India | 75th |
| Sri Lanka | 91st |
| Bangladesh | 93rd |
| Nepal | 95th |
| Pakistan | 97th |
The rankings are based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For Indian travelers, this jump signals a slow but positive recovery in travel freedom, reducing the hassle of paperwork for 56 specific global destinations.
