What Do the New Atal Canteens Offer?
The Atal Canteens offer a substantial meal for an affordable price. While each meal costs approximately ₹30 to prepare, the Delhi Government provides a ₹25 subsidy, ensuring beneficiaries only pay ₹5. Each plate delivers 700-800 calories and 20-25 grams of protein, featuring a standardized menu of dal, rice, roti, and seasonal vegetables. These meals are specifically designed for laborers, daily wage workers, rickshaw pullers, and residents of slum clusters, operating twice daily for both lunch and dinner.
Technology and Quality Assurance in Operation
The entire Atal Canteen scheme is managed by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), with stringent quality control measures in place. Food safety and hygiene are regularly monitored by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories. The canteens also utilize a digital token system and are equipped with CCTV surveillance, linking them to a real-time monitoring center for efficient operations. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has stated that the initiative aims to ensure “food security with dignity” and fulfill the promise that “no one in Delhi should go to bed hungry.”
CM Gupta Receives Award Amidst Expansion
In a related development, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was honored with the 50th Matri Shree Award on February 18, 2026, recognizing her contributions to social welfare. The inauguration of these 25 new canteens brings the total number of operational Atal Canteens closer to the government’s ambitious target of 100 facilities across Delhi. The first phase saw 45 canteens launched on December 25, 2025, with a total budget allocation of approximately ₹104.24 crore for the entire scheme.
