SpiceJet has announced a significant expansion plan to strengthen its network and operational capabilities. This move aligns with their broader goal to expand the fleet to 60 planes and double their operational capacity by Winter 2026.

Details of the New Agreement and Lease Model

The airline is adopting a calibrated approach to fleet expansion to ensure reliability for passengers. This current expansion involves a mix of wet leases and damp leases. Under the damp lease arrangement, the lessor provides the aircraft and handles maintenance, while the airline is responsible for the crew and insurance.

According to the latest updates, the plan includes:

  • Fleet Goal: Reaching a total of 60 aircraft through new additions and returning grounded planes.
  • Grounded Aircraft: Plans to bring back around 10 grounded planes into service by April 2026.
  • Engine Repair: 19 engines have been sent globally for necessary repairs to support this comeback.

Financial Health and Future Connectivity

The expansion is backed by recent financial restructuring and fund-raising efforts. In September 2024, SpiceJet raised ₹3,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP). Additionally, the airline has successfully restructured lease obligations worth $121.18 million with Carlyle Aviation Management.

Key operational targets include:

  • Daily Flights: Aiming to operate more than 300 daily flights by Winter 2026.
  • Capacity: Targeting 220 crore Available Seat Kilometers (ASKM).
  • Stock Market: Following the announcement, airline shares saw a positive trend with a 1% rise.

The management, including CMD Ajay Singh, has emphasized that this expansion is crucial for meeting growing passenger demand and improving service reliability across domestic and international routes.
