The North East District Administration has received the measurement report for the widening of Gamri Road in East Delhi. A private agency conducted the survey and officially submitted the findings to the authorities on March 2, 2026. This 3 km long stretch, maintained by the PWD, is currently a major bottleneck for commuters. The project aims to restore the road to its original 100-foot width as specified in the Delhi Master Plan.

Current Status and Project Timeline
The measurement report will now be forwarded to the Land Department or Bhumi Vibhag for verification of land ownership. While the road is recorded as 100 feet wide in the Master Plan, the actual available space is currently only 40 to 50 feet due to encroachments. Officials estimate that all legal and administrative paperwork will be completed by the end of 2026. Once the documentation is cleared, the physical widening work is expected to commence.
Encroachment Rules and Impact on Traffic
The administration has clarified that illegal occupations on government land, including areas near traditional water bodies like Johad, will be cleared. MLA Ajay Mahawar has stated that the focus is on restoring the road to its full width to ease traffic flow. Regarding compensation, the following rules will apply:
- Compensation is only for residents and shopkeepers with valid legal property documents
- The Land Department will decide the eligibility and rates for any payouts
- The widening will connect Jaffrabad Road directly to the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway (NH-709B)
- Commuters currently face delays of 30 to 60 minutes on this 3 km stretch due to narrow lanes
