Residents of East Delhi have faced tragedy recently on the Sonia Vihar Pushta Road due to frequent road accidents. What caused the sudden ban on heavy vehicles?

The situation became critical after multiple accidents involving heavy trucks and dumpers occurred in quick succession. On February 25, a 10-year-old girl named Disha died when a speeding dumper hit a motorcycle at the Third Pushta. Her brother and a relative also suffered critical injuries in the same incident.

Before this tragedy, on January 28, a 26-year-old man named Ayush Pratap Singh was killed at Zero Pushta. In the last 30 days alone, official reports confirm that two people have died and six others have been injured on this stretch. These incidents led to protests by locals demanding immediate action against the heavy vehicles that use this road to access Ready-Mix Concrete plants.

What is the status of the elevated road project?

To solve the traffic chaos permanently, a proposal for a 5.5 to 6-kilometer elevated road is currently in the pipeline. This flyover is planned to run from Nanaksar Gurudwara to Shani Mandir near the UP Border with an estimated cost of ₹500 crore. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma and local MLA Kapil Mishra have supported the project to reduce congestion.

However, the construction is currently stalled as it awaits environmental clearance from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Standing Committee on Yamuna. Reports indicate that about 250 trees are obstructing the widening process. Since the road runs adjacent to the Yamuna floodplains, strict environmental approvals are necessary before the foundation work can proceed further.

How is the police enforcing the new rules?

Following the public outcry, the Delhi Police has officially stopped trucks, dumpers, and transit mixers from using the Pushta Road. Police teams have been deployed to catch violators, and cases are being registered under strict sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and negligence.

Despite the official ban, some residents have reported that heavy vehicles still attempt to pass through the area illegally, especially at night. The police have assured that surveillance is being tightened to stop this unauthorized movement completely and prevent further loss of life.
