PhonePe has officially rolled out biometric authentication for UPI payments, marking a major shift in how millions of Indians handle daily transactions. Users can now complete payments using their fingerprint or face ID instead of typing a 4-digit or 6-digit PIN. This new system is designed to make payments faster while adding a hardware-grade layer of security to the process. The move is expected to reduce the time spent on small-value transactions at shops and markets.

New Transaction Rules and Limits for Biometric Pay

PhonePe has set specific guidelines for using this feature to ensure both convenience and safety for its users. The biometric option is currently available for Android smartphone users, with an iOS update for FaceID expected to arrive soon. The system is built to be a seamless replacement for daily small payments.

  • Transaction Limit: One-touch biometric payments are allowed for amounts up to ₹5,000 only.
  • High-Value Security: Any payment exceeding the ₹5,000 limit still requires the traditional manual entry of a UPI PIN.
  • Fallback System: If the biometric scan fails due to hardware or lighting issues, the app automatically prompts for the standard PIN.
  • Setup Process: Users can enable this by visiting the Profile section, selecting Manage Payments, and then Biometric Pay.

Security Standards and User Benefits

Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, stated that this technology uses the physical device hardware to store data. This ensures that biometric information never leaves the phone. Unlike a PIN, which can be watched by others in public, biometrics are personal and much harder to steal or guess. The RBI and NPCI have approved this method as a secure two-factor authentication for the Indian market.

Feature Biometric Payment Traditional PIN
Transaction Speed One-touch instant Requires manual typing
Privacy Level High (No shoulder-surfing) Moderate (PIN can be seen)
Cost Free of charge Free of charge
Best For Elderly and fast payments High-value transfers

This update is particularly helpful for elderly users or those who find it difficult to remember complex codes. By removing the friction of typing a PIN for every small grocery or tea stall payment, the platform aims to make digital payments more accessible to everyone. The feature is a free update and does not involve any additional service fees.
