The Delhi Traffic Police has reported a significant improvement in road safety during the Holi festival this year. Official data released on March 5 indicates a 32% drop in total traffic violations compared to last year. With strict enforcement and heavy police deployment across the capital, a total of 4,929 challans were issued, showing that motorists were generally more careful during the celebrations on Wednesday.

Breakdown of Traffic Violations

Out of the total fines issued, 1,204 drivers were booked specifically for drunken driving, which is a slight decrease from the previous year. The police also penalized 3,725 people for other common offenses such as riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, and dangerous driving. The Western Range recorded the highest number of violations in the city.

  • Western Range: 969 total challans (297 for drunk driving)
  • Central Range: 884 total challans
  • Southern Range: 857 total challans
  • New Delhi Range: Lowest violations with 69 drunk driving cases

Strict Penalties and Police Action

To ensure safety, the police had deployed teams at 134 major intersections and 79 joint pickets under the supervision of Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta emphasized that strict action is being taken against offenders. As per the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, driving licenses for serious violations like drunk driving and red-light jumping are liable to be seized and suspended for at least three months.
