Residents living near Uttam Nagar and Dwarka are set to witness a major transformation in their locality. The Delhi government is converting a massive 50-acre garbage dumping ground in Nawada Village into a green community space named the ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Garden’. The project, which has an estimated budget of ₹9.53 crore, is being executed by the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department to provide a much-needed ‘green lung’ to the area.
What facilities will be available in the new park?
The park is designed to replace the foul smell of the dumping ground with fresh air and recreational zones. A major highlight will be a 12-foot statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Officials have finalized a layout that caters to all age groups, dedicating 21 acres specifically to the memorial park area. The planned amenities include:
- Amphitheater: A cultural space with a seating capacity for 200 people.
- Sports Zone: Dedicated courts for basketball and badminton enthusiasts.
- Public Amenities: Two Chhath ghats for festivals, walking tracks, and a food court.
- Greenery: Planting of over 6,000 indigenous saplings like Neem, Amaltas, and Mango.
What is the timeline and current status?
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project on December 27, 2025. As of March 2026, the work has entered an active phase with the deployment of 66 heavy machines, including trash skimmers and hydraulic excavators. These machines are clearing legacy waste and desilting the Najafgarh Drain to prevent waterlogging.
I&FC Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma is overseeing the progress to ensure the project meets its target completion date of August 2026. This initiative is also a key part of the Yamuna Rejuvenation plan, as it aims to clean the largest drain emptying into the river while creating a beautiful public space.
