A tragic incident occurred at a sewer construction site in Northeast Delhi where a 26-year-old labourer lost his life due to alleged negligence. The accident took place on Friday, March 6, 2026, in the Sonia Vihar area. The victim, identified as Afzal, was working inside a deep pit when an earthmover operator accidentally dumped a large amount of soil on top of him. This incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at construction sites managed by private contractors for government agencies.
How did the accident happen at the Sonia Vihar site?
According to the initial investigation, the work was being executed by a private contractor for the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) at Third Pushta in Sonia Vihar. Afzal, a resident of Meerut, had entered a 15-foot-deep pit to remove some cables.
While he was still inside, the operator of an earthmover (JCB) allegedly dumped soil into the pit without checking if anyone was present below. Police officials noted that Afzal was buried under the soil for approximately 15 minutes. Local residents and site staff managed to rescue him and rushed him to the Trauma Centre in Civil Lines, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
What action has the police taken against the operator?
The Sonia Vihar Police Station has taken swift action following the incident. A case has been registered for death by negligence under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police are currently investigating the specific role of the earthmover operator and checking if mandatory safety measures were in place.
DCP (Northeast) Ashish Mishra confirmed that prima facie, the incident appears to be a mistake by the operator who failed to spot the worker. A forensic team was sent to the site on Saturday to collect evidence. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family after the postmortem examination was completed on March 7, 2026.
