Passengers planning to fly with IndiGo will have to pay more for their tickets starting from March 14, 2026. The airline is introducing a new fuel charge on all domestic and international flights booked on or after this date. This decision comes after a massive increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel prices caused by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. With crude oil prices touching USD 100 per barrel, airlines are facing heavy operational costs.
Why is IndiGo adding a fuel charge
IndiGo officials stated that Aviation Turbine Fuel makes up about 40 percent of the airline operating costs. The International Air Transport Association Jet Fuel Monitor recently reported an 85 percent increase in regional fuel prices. The ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran has created severe instability in the energy market. Air India and Air India Express already announced similar surcharges earlier in the week. IndiGo mentioned that they are adding a relatively smaller amount to avoid putting a massive burden on regular customers. Major Indian airlines have also requested the government to reduce aviation fuel taxes to help them manage these rising expenses.
Route wise fuel charge details
The new fuel charge will be applied per sector, meaning it is calculated for each flight segment based on the destination. The fee structure applies to all new bookings made from midnight on March 14. This will directly increase the final ticket price for everyday passengers traveling for work or holidays.
| Route Destination | Fuel Charge (INR) |
|---|---|
| Domestic (Within India) | 425 |
| Indian Subcontinent | 425 |
| Middle East | 900 |
| South East Asia and China | 1800 |
| Africa and West Asia | 1800 |
| Europe | 2300 |
Domestic and Indian Subcontinent flights will see an extra 425 rupees per sector. Middle East flights will cost an extra 900 rupees per segment. Longer routes to South East Asia, China, Africa, West Asia, and Europe will attract higher charges ranging from 1800 to 2300 rupees. Passengers traveling on these routes will also experience longer flight durations due to current airspace restrictions in the region.
