The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured citizens that there is no shortage of LPG cylinders in the country. To meet the recent surge in demand and counter panic booking, domestic LPG production has been increased by 30 percent compared to the first week of March. Officials confirmed that the supply chain is running smoothly, with over 50 lakh cylinders being delivered to households every single day across a vast network of retail outlets.

Why is there a 25-day wait rule for LPG booking?

To prevent hoarding and panic buying among consumers, the government has introduced a 25-day inter-booking period for domestic gas refills. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma clarified that there is absolutely no dry-out situation anywhere in India. The recent rush in cylinder bookings is purely panic-driven rather than an actual supply issue.

The normal delivery cycle remains stable at about 2.5 days. To further secure supply for families, the government has invoked the LPG Control Order under the Essential Commodities Act. This mandate ensures that 100 percent of domestic LPG production goes directly to household consumers and essential services like hospitals.

To ease the pressure on LPG availability, the government has also released an additional 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene to states as an alternative fuel option.

What are the current LPG prices and supply arrangements?

The government has successfully secured alternate supply routes to maintain smooth operations. Approximately 70 percent of crude imports have been diverted away from the Strait of Hormuz to bypass global disruptions. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured Parliament that the kitchens of over 33 crore families will keep running without interruptions.

A three-member committee of Executive Directors from IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL has been formed to oversee and manage commercial gas allocations for hotels and restaurants. Prices saw a revision earlier this month due to global energy market trends.
