Greater Noida is making a major transition in its domestic energy consumption as more than 300 residential societies have officially become LPG-free by switching to Piped Natural Gas (PNG). Local authorities and gas distribution companies are now working to bring the remaining societies under the pipeline network to ensure a more stable and secure energy supply. This move is part of a larger national initiative to modernize urban fuel distribution and reduce reliance on traditional cylinders.

New Mandatory Timelines for PNG Connections

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has introduced strict guidelines under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order 2026. According to the new rules, households located in areas where PNG infrastructure is present must switch from LPG within three months of receiving a notification. Failure to comply with this timeline will result in the discontinuation of their LPG cylinder supply. The government has set the following deadlines for various entities:

  • RWAs and Housing Societies: Must grant permission for pipeline installation within three working days of receiving a request.
  • Gas Distribution Companies: Must provide the last-mile PNG connection within 48 hours once approval is received.
  • LPG Discontinuation: If a society or individual obstructs the installation, the LPG supply to the complex may be halted after 90 days.
  • National Drive: The National PNG Drive 2.0 has been extended until June 30, 2026, to complete pending connections.

Infrastructure Expansion and Supply Measures

In the National Capital Region, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) is leading the infrastructure rollout to ensure domestic and commercial consumers receive uninterrupted gas. As of late March 2026, gas supply has already started for over 5.29 lakh domestic consumers across various priority areas. To further facilitate this shift, the government has streamlined approval processes and directed local bodies to reduce road-cutting charges for pipeline laying. Key data regarding the current expansion includes:

Metric Current Status (2026)
Daily New Connections Over 10,000 nationwide
LPG Booking Interval (Urban) 25 days
LPG Booking Interval (Rural) 45 days
Priority Areas Targeted 110 Geographic Areas
New Connection Target 60 Lakh households

While the focus remains on PNG, the government is also maintaining sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG to prevent any shortage during the transition phase. Residents are encouraged to adopt PNG as it is marketed as a safer and more environmentally sustainable alternative to stored gas cylinders.
