The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is set to finish the Bhairon Marg underpass by December 2026. This comes after Indian Railways granted the crucial No Objection Certificate (NOC) on April 6, 2026. This approval removes the final technical roadblock for the project, which is a major part of the Pragati Maidan Integrated Transit Corridor. What are the changes in the revised plan?
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved a modified design in August 2025 to address technical challenges. Due to high groundwater levels and the proximity to the Yamuna river, the underpass dimensions were changed to ensure structural safety. These modifications mean the underpass will be used by light vehicles only. The detailed changes are as follows:

Why was the project delayed?
The underpass project faced several hurdles including damage from the 2023 floods and uneven settlement of the land. Technical experts from IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay were consulted to provide redesign proposals. To prevent future issues, the PWD is now using foundation stabilization through grouting and structural stitching beneath the railway lines. The broader project was built at a cost exceeding 920 crore rupees funded by the Central Government, and the remaining work will be completed within the existing sanctioned budget.
How will this benefit commuters?
Once operational, the Bhairon Marg underpass (Underpass No. 5) will provide signal-free connectivity for those traveling between East, Central, and Southeast Delhi. It is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on Ring Road and Bhairon Marg. This will improve the flow of vehicles moving towards ITO, India Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, and Noida. Additionally, it will ensure smoother traffic management during major events held at the Bharat Mandapam complex.
