delhibreakings bihar nuclear power plant update banka siwan survey nawada solar project Big Update on Bihar Nuclear Plant, Survey Complete in Banka While Work Starts in Siwan

The Bihar government has speeded up its efforts to set up nuclear power plants in the state to meet growing electricity demands. In a high-level meeting held on February 20, 2026, at Vidyut Bhawan, officials reviewed the progress of these massive energy projects. The focus remains on identifying suitable land and ensuring water availability for these plants. This move is part of a larger plan to shift away from coal-based power and create new jobs in the region.

Current Status of Nuclear Sites in Banka and Siwan

Officials confirmed that the preliminary land survey in the Banka district is now complete. Two specific areas, Shambhuganj and Bhitiya, were found technically suitable for the project because of their rocky ground and low population. This is a major step forward for the project in this region.

Meanwhile, work has just started in the Siwan district. Teams have begun the initial land assessment and soil testing to see if the area can support a nuclear facility. The government is also looking at the Rajauli site in Nawada, which remains a top contender for the state’s first nuclear plant with an estimated cost of nearly ₹20,000 crore. The main challenge right now is arranging a steady water supply for cooling, for which options like pipelines from the Ganges are being explored.

Massive Solar and Storage Projects in Nawada and Lakhisarai

Apart from nuclear energy, Bihar is making big moves in solar and storage power. The Kajra Solar Power Plant in Lakhisarai is moving fast, with a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed on February 4, 2026. This plant includes a large battery system to provide electricity even after the sun sets.

Big investments are also coming to Nawada. Two major companies, Greenko and Sun Petrochemicals, are investing a total of ₹13,000 crore to build pumped storage projects. These projects act like giant water batteries to store power. Once construction begins, these projects in Nawada are expected to create around 8,000 jobs for local workers.
