Chief Minister Rekha Gupta issued an 8-point safety framework on February 7 to prevent such accidents in the future. These rules are mandatory for all agencies like PWD, MCD, and DJB involved in excavation work.
- Warning Signs: Agencies must place clear warning boards well before the work site to alert commuters.
- Lighting: Sites must use reflector lights, blinkers, and luminous tapes, which is very important for night safety.
- Barricading: Strong barricades must surround the entire work area to stop people or vehicles from entering accidentally.
- Pathways: Safe walkways must be created specifically for pedestrians.
- Traffic Management: Proper diversion plans must be made in coordination with the traffic police.
- Cleanliness: No excavated soil or dust should be visible outside the designated zone to prevent pollution.
- Inspections: Senior engineers are required to visit sites regularly to check safety compliance.
- Accountability: Field officers will be held personally responsible for any safety lapses.
What action has been taken in the Janakpuri case?
The government has taken strict action against those responsible for the negligence in the Janakpuri incident. Three engineers from the Delhi Jal Board, including a Junior Engineer, an Assistant Engineer, and an Executive Engineer, have been suspended pending an inquiry. The police have also arrested a subcontractor named Rajesh Kumar Prajapati in connection with the case.
Additionally, the Delhi government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the family of Kamal Dhyani.
