The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has officially announced that the Magenta Line (Line-8) is set to become the longest corridor in the entire network. Recent updates confirm that after integrating the newly sanctioned extensions, the total length of this line will reach approximately 89 kilometers. This major expansion will connect Botanical Garden to Inderlok and will surpass the Pink Line in length.

What are the key features of the new Magenta Line?

Once the construction is complete, the Magenta Line will cover a massive stretch of 89 km. It will feature a total of 65 stations, making it a crucial lifeline for daily commuters in the National Capital Region. Out of these 65 stations, 40 will be built underground to save space on the surface.

The entire corridor is designed for Unattended Train Operation (UTO). This means the trains on this route will be fully driverless, offering a modern and efficient travel experience. The inclusion of the Indraprastha – Inderlok corridor as an extension of this line has made this massive length possible.

Which stations will act as major interchange hubs?

This line will offer the highest connectivity in the Delhi Metro network with 21 interchange stations. This will allow passengers to switch lines easily without travelling long distances. The DMRC has highlighted specific hubs that will serve as ‘Triple Interchanges’.

Four major stations will allow passengers to switch between three different metro lines:

  • Central Secretariat
  • Azadpur
  • New Delhi
  • Inderlok

When will the project be completed and what is the cost?

The Union Cabinet sanctioned the Phase-V (A) extension, which includes the R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha stretch, in December 2025. The estimated cost for this specific segment is around ₹9,570.4 crore. The total project cost for Phase-V (A) is approximately ₹12,015 crore.

Construction work is moving forward with a target to complete the Phase-V (A) project by late 2028 or early 2029. However, various sections under Phase-IV are scheduled to open for the public in stages throughout 2026 and 2027.
