Delhi is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade as five key stretches across the city are set for a complete revamp. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu reviewed the redevelopment proposal on March 27, 2026, to transform transit corridors into pedestrian-friendly spaces. The School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) designed the plan to integrate multiple transport modes while focusing on beautification and safety. Implementation will begin after a feasibility study is conducted next month.

What new features will these Delhi roads have?

The revamp project aims to create “complete street” corridors that cater to everyone, not just motor vehicles. The plan includes dedicated cycle tracks and wide sidewalks to promote non-motorized transport. Public plazas and resting shelters will be built to offer comfort to commuters and pedestrians. To boost the local night economy, the design incorporates movable vending zones and informal craft bazaars along the stretches. Enhanced street lighting and CCTV-based surveillance will also be installed to ensure better security for women and children.

How will the project improve urban living and traffic?

The redevelopment focuses on solving long-standing issues like urban flooding and traffic jams. Integrated stormwater drainage systems are a core part of the plan to prevent waterlogging and silt accumulation. Scientifically-designed green central verges will help reduce dust pollution and improve the city’s air quality. The project involves multiple agencies to ensure high standards and efficient execution:

  • LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu: Reviewing and supporting the coordination between agencies.
  • School of Planning and Architecture: Responsible for the comprehensive design and planning.
  • Public Works Department (PWD): Expected to lead the physical implementation of the roads.
  • MCD and DDA: Coordinating for parking facilities and riverfront cycle tracks.

The Delhi government is also working on a separate road redevelopment project worth ₹802.18 crore for over 400 kilometres of roads. Additionally, a ₹1,471-crore transit corridor for Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and the ₹6,500-crore New Delhi railway station project are part of the broader effort to modernize the capital’s infrastructure.
