Air travel in India is about to become much more passenger-friendly. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has introduced a major update to the aviation rules that directly benefits the common man. Starting from March 26, 2026, passengers will have a special “Look-in Option” that allows them to cancel or change their flight tickets within 48 hours of booking without paying any extra penalties or cancellation fees.

How does the 48-hour free cancellation work?

This new facility is designed to help people who might make a mistake while booking or have a sudden change of plans shortly after buying a ticket. However, there are specific conditions you must meet to use this benefit.

  • Time Limit: You must cancel or amend the ticket within 48 hours of booking.
  • Advance Booking: For domestic flights, your travel date must be at least 7 days away. For international flights, the travel date must be at least 15 days away.
  • Booking Method: This benefit is only available if you book the ticket directly through the airline’s official website. Tickets bought via travel agents or third-party apps are not covered yet.
  • Fare Difference: If you change your flight to a new date and the ticket price is higher, you will still have to pay the difference in fare.

What are the new rules for refunds and name corrections?

The DGCA has also tightened the rules regarding refunds to ensure passengers get their money back on time. If you paid by credit card, the refund must be processed within 7 days. For cash payments, refunds should be immediate at the airline office. Additionally, airlines must now refund all statutory taxes like the User Development Fee and Airport Development Fee, even if you booked a “non-refundable” ticket.

Another big relief is regarding spelling mistakes. If you make a minor spelling error in a passenger’s name while booking directly on the website, the airline must correct it for free if you report it within 24 hours. These steps are being taken following a high number of complaints regarding refunds and rigid airline policies.
