The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken a major step against Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani by attaching his luxurious 17-storey residence in Mumbai. The property, known as ‘Abode’ and located in the upscale Pali Hill area of Bandra, is valued at approximately ₹3,716.83 crore. This significant action was taken on Wednesday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of an ongoing investigation into a massive bank fraud case involving Reliance Communications (RCom).
Why has ED taken this action against Anil Ambani?
The investigation is rooted in an FIR filed by the CBI regarding alleged criminal conspiracy and the diversion of public funds. Reliance Communications and its group companies reportedly have an outstanding debt of nearly ₹40,185 crore. The ED’s probe revealed that the Pali Hill property was being held under a private family trust named ‘RiseE Trust’.
According to the agency, this structure was created to distance Anil Ambani from the direct ownership of the house. The ED alleges that this was done to shield the asset from lenders and to protect it from being claimed against personal guarantees given by Ambani. With this latest attachment, the total value of assets seized in this specific probe has now reached ₹15,700 crore.
What are the next steps in the investigation?
Trouble seems to be mounting for the 66-year-old industrialist as the investigation intensifies. Anil Ambani is scheduled to appear before the ED in New Delhi today, February 26, for a second round of questioning regarding these financial dealings. He had previously recorded his statement with the agency in August 2025.
The Supreme Court has also intervened in the matter, directing the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) earlier this month to expedite the probe into the alleged ₹40,000 crore fraud. The agency has also summoned his wife, Tina Ambani, for questioning. Sources suggest that once the provisional attachment order is confirmed by the adjudicating authority, the ED may move to take physical possession of the high-value property.
