A tragic incident at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad has left the police force and the public in shock. On Saturday evening, a joyride called the ‘Tsunami’ collapsed, leading to the death of Haryana Police Inspector Jagdish Prasad. The 58-year-old officer was on duty and died while trying to rescue people trapped on the ride after it snapped. The incident occurred just a month before his scheduled retirement in March 2026.
Government Announces Compensation and Martyr Status
The Haryana government has officially recognized the bravery of the deceased officer. They have accorded martyr status to Inspector Jagdish Prasad for losing his life in the line of duty. Along with this honor, the state has announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for his family. This financial aid aims to support his wife and children during this difficult time.
Officials also confirmed that one member of the family will be provided with a government job. The inspector was cremated with full state honors on February 8 in his native village in Mathura. Additionally, the government has announced financial assistance of ₹1 lakh each for the 11 to 13 people who were injured in the accident.
Investigation and Arrests Updates
The Haryana Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the negligence behind the swing collapse. Authorities have arrested the operator of the ride, Mohammad Shakir of Himachal Fun Care, and his staff member Nitesh. They are facing charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The Faridabad District Administration is also conducting a separate inquiry to ensure such accidents do not happen again. As per the latest updates, the specific swing area remains closed indefinitely. However, the rest of the Surajkund Mela is open to visitors from 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM. The ticket prices and schedule are as follows:
