The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi has achieved a significant medical milestone by performing a kidney transplant without making the patient unconscious. This unique surgery, known as an ‘Awake Kidney Transplant’, was conducted on a 42-year-old man who remained conscious throughout the procedure. Doctors claim this is the first time such a surgery has been successfully performed in Delhi.

What is the Awake Transplant technique?
In this procedure, the medical team decided not to use General Anesthesia, which puts the entire body to sleep. Instead, they used Epidural Anesthesia to numb only the lower part of the body from the waist down. The patient was able to breathe naturally without machines and even spoke to the doctors during the operation. This technique allows for faster recovery and is considered a safer option for patients who have heart or lung conditions that make full anesthesia risky.
Surgery Details and Medical Team
The surgery took place on February 6, 2026, and the patient is being discharged today, February 10. The successful operation was led by Dr. Abhiyutthan Singh Jadaon from the Renal Transplant department, supported by Dr. Gaurav Sindwani and Dr. R.P. Mathur. Being a government autonomous institute, ILBS offers these high-end treatments at very affordable rates compared to private hospitals where costs can range between Rs 10 to 25 lakh. Patients in the EWS category often receive this care completely free of cost.
