The Government of India has assured citizens that the country is in a very secure position regarding energy supplies. Despite recent concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, official sources confirmed on Friday that there is no need to worry about the availability of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is closely monitoring the situation to ensure smooth operations across the nation and maintain stability in the market.

Current Petrol, Diesel and LPG Stock Status

Data shows that India currently holds a total inventory cover of approximately 8 weeks, which means there is enough stock for about 60 days. This includes 25 days of crude oil inventory and another 25 days of petrol and diesel stock that is either in transit or stored at refineries. Strategic reserves along with commercial inventories can theoretically cover another 40 to 45 days if a total disruption occurs.

For LPG users, the government has directed refineries to maximize production. Stocks are sufficient to meet the demand of over 33 crore consumers. Petrochemical feedstocks like propane and butane are being diverted specifically to produce domestic cooking gas. This step ensures that common households will face no issues with their cylinder refills.

Government Strategy and Price Updates

To reduce risks, India has actively diversified its import sources. Currently, about 60% of the crude oil comes from routes that do not pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Supplies are actively coming from Russia, which provided about 20% of the total crude in February, and the USA is supplying significant amounts of LPG under a one-year contract signed recently.

Regarding prices, global oil rates have touched $80 per barrel, but government sources have stated there are no immediate plans to increase retail prices for petrol or diesel. The Ministry monitors the situation twice daily through a 24×7 control room to manage any potential issues immediately. The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited also remains fully operational, dismissing any rumors of a shutdown.
