The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has implemented significant changes regarding birth and death certificates issued between the years 2012 and 2022. Following the unification of the three municipal corporations, the registration numbers for these documents have been updated to ensure a unique identification system for every citizen. Residents holding certificates from this specific period are now required to download the updated version from the official portal. This step is crucial because the old registration numbers will no longer reflect correctly during digital verification processes needed for essential services like school admissions or passport applications.
Why Your Old Certificate Might Not Work Online?
The primary reason behind this major update is the unification of the North, South, and East Delhi Municipal Corporations in May 2022. During the migration of data to a single digital platform, the authorities discovered that many registration numbers were duplicated across the three former civic bodies. To resolve this conflict, the MCD has assigned a specific unique registration number to every record to maintain accuracy.
While your old physical certificate is not technically illegal, it will likely fail during digital verification. If an institution scans the QR code or tries to verify the record online, the portal might show “Record Not Found” or display new details that do not match the old document. Consequently, for any online verification, only the new certificate containing the updated QR code will be considered valid.
Process to Download Updated Certificates and Fees
Residents can easily access their updated records through the official MCD portals at mcdonline.nic.in or rbd.mcdonline.nic.in. If your record is already registered in the system, downloading the digitally signed certificate is generally free of cost. This new document is now seamlessly linked with the Civil Registration System (CRS) of the central government and DigiLocker for easier access.
It is strictly advised to replace your old document with the updated certificate for the following requirements:
- School Admissions and Transfers
- Passport and Visa Applications
- Insurance Claims
- Government Welfare Schemes (DBT)
If you face trouble finding your record using the old number, you should utilize the ‘Legacy Data’ search option on the website by entering details like parents’ names and the date of birth. This update ensures that your personal data is permanently synchronized with the central database, preventing future administrative hassles.
