The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has presented a historic budget proposal for the financial year 2026-27. For the first time since the unification of the corporation, the budget shows a surplus with estimated savings of around ₹1,200 crore. Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma presented the estimates on Wednesday, confirming that there will be no new taxes imposed on the residents of Delhi this year.

What are the main financial benefits for residents?
The biggest relief for the common man is that property tax rates remain unchanged for both residential and commercial properties. The corporation aims to earn revenue through better management rather than hiking taxes. A major announcement was made for rural areas, where residential plots up to 200 square meters in Lal Dora and extended Lal Dora villages are now exempt from property tax.
The total income for the upcoming year is estimated at over ₹17,044 crore, while expenditure is projected at ₹16,697 crore. To support local development, the fund allocated to each councilor has been increased from ₹1.55 crore to ₹2 crore per year.
New Schemes: One Road-One Day and Garbage-Free Delhi
The MCD has introduced a unique “One Road-One Day” scheme to improve road infrastructure. Under this plan, one major road in every zone will undergo complete maintenance daily, including cleaning, painting, and footpath repairs. This is expected to roll out fully by September.
Regarding the city’s waste problem, the corporation has set a strict deadline of December 2028 to completely clear the landfill sites at Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur. These sites will be converted into green zones and organic gardens using new waste-to-energy plants.
Health, Education and Animal Welfare Updates
The budget focuses heavily on improving neighborhood facilities. An ‘Ayushman Arogya Mandir’ will be established in every ward to provide primary healthcare closer to home. Schools will get mandatory CCTV cameras and smart classrooms.
For animal welfare, a special budget of ₹10 crore has been allocated. The MCD plans to build at least one dog shelter in every zone (12 zones total) to manage the stray dog population and strengthen sterilization programs.
