delhibreakings nehru place parking challan update mcd action plan march 2026 Nehru Place Parking Update: MCD to Start Heavy Challan Drive, Surface Parking Contracts Ending This Month

The traffic chaos at Nehru Place, Asia’s largest computer hardware market, shows no signs of ending despite the recent opening of a massive multi-level parking facility. Even though the new complex was inaugurated last month by LG Vinai Kumar Saxena and CM Rekha Gupta, the entry points to the market remain choked with cars and bikes. Officials have now confirmed that surface parking contracts will officially expire in March 2026, after which a strict enforcement drive will begin against anyone parking on the roadside.

Why is the new parking facility staying empty?

Official data reveals a surprising trend where nearly 90 percent of the new multi-level parking (MLCP) remains vacant. The facility, built by DDA at a cost of over ₹60 crore, has the capacity to hold 1,000 vehicles, yet visitors are still crowding the streets. Currently, four surface parking sites are operating illegally within the 500-meter radius of the new building. Visitors often choose these spots because they are closer to the shops, ignoring the 24/7 automated facility that offers FasTAG payments and CCTV security.

What measures will be taken after March?

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced a zero-tolerance policy starting next month. According to official rules, on-street parking is prohibited within 500 meters of a multi-level parking lot. Once the current surface contracts end in March, the authorities will implement strict actions:

  • Heavy Fines: A special campaign will be launched to issue challans to any car or bike found parked outside the designated complex.
  • No Contract Renewal: The MCD will not renew the old surface parking tenders, a decision recently upheld by the Delhi High Court.
  • Price Penalty: If any essential surface parking remains, it must be priced at three times the standard rate to discourage people from using it.
