A tragic accident occurred in Noida’s Sector 142 on Sunday morning, leaving two workers dead and one seriously injured. The incident took place around 11:00 am at a construction site managed by Shri Mahavir Construction Company. Workers were performing tasks on the 8th floor of an under-construction 10-storey building when the external scaffolding suddenly collapsed. The collapse sent three workers falling from a great height, leading to immediate panic at the site.

How did the accident happen?

According to preliminary reports, the scaffolding or shuttering used for construction failed catastrophically. Mantu Singh, aged 45, and Shibu Singh, aged 24, fell to the ground and lost their lives. A third worker named Mithun, who is the brother of Mantu Singh, miraculously survived. He fell but got entangled in a safety net on the 5th floor, which saved him from hitting the ground.

Investigations suggest serious negligence on the part of the builders. Officials noted that the company allegedly tried to cut costs by installing scaffolding only between the 7th and 8th floors instead of building it up from the ground. Furthermore, workers were reportedly working without mandatory safety harnesses, and safety nets were not installed properly across all sections.

Police Action and Investigation Updates

Following the deadly incident, the Noida Police acted swiftly. The site supervisor and the contractor were detained and subsequently arrested for criminal negligence. DCP Central Noida Shakti Mohan Awasthy confirmed that a detailed inquiry is underway.

Key Actions Taken:

  • All construction work at the site has been halted indefinitely by the Noida Authority.
  • A team led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) is investigating regulatory lapses.
  • The labor department is checking if the site violated the Building and Other Construction Workers Act.

The authorities are also looking into compensation for the victims’ families, although the final amount has not been publicly announced yet. In recent similar cases, fines ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh have been imposed on contractors for safety violations.
