The incident, which occurred on March 12, 2026, resulted in the death of one storekeeper and left 38 other employees injured. Details of the incident and casualties

The fire broke out at approximately 5:30 AM on a Thursday at the electricity meter manufacturing unit. A short circuit on the ground floor is the suspected cause of the blaze, which spread rapidly through the four-story building due to the presence of plastic and electrical wires. It took nearly 40 hours for a team of 150 firefighters and 35 fire tenders to extinguish the flames. The body of the deceased worker, identified as Upendra, was recovered from the basement four days after the fire started.

Major safety violations found during investigation

Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar Choubey confirmed that the factory did not follow standard safety protocols. While 341 workers were present during the shift, more than 300 managed to escape, but many had to jump from the upper floors to save their lives. The investigation highlighted several critical issues:

  • There were no dedicated emergency exits for the hundreds of employees.
  • Only two staircases were available for over 250 workers on the upper floors.
  • The basement contained highly flammable materials like batteries and cardboard, which caused frequent explosions.
  • Electrical wiring was outdated and the machines were found to be overloaded.

Action taken by local authorities

Following the confirmation of safety rule violations, the local administration took strict action by sealing the factory and halting all production activities. The owner of the factory is reportedly abroad, and the police are currently in contact with the management for further legal proceedings. Most of the injured workers suffered fractures in their legs while attempting to escape the burning building.
