delhibreakings pwd plans integrated transit corridor ina mehrauli aurobindo marg decongestion PWD Plans Signal-Free Drive from INA to Mehrauli, New Proposal to Decongest South Delhi

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has put forward a major plan to fix the traffic mess on Aurobindo Marg. As of February 13, 2026, officials are working on an integrated transit corridor that connects INA to Mehrauli. This 7-km stretch is one of the busiest routes in South Delhi, and the new project aims to make the daily commute much smoother for thousands of drivers who face daily jams.

What does the new corridor proposal include?

The main goal of this project is to create a signal-free road that allows vehicles to move without constant stops at traffic lights. PWD officials mentioned that this plan will be formally proposed in the Delhi Budget 2026–27. The project involves building infrastructure that works well with the upcoming Delhi Metro Phase IV lines to ensure public transport and private vehicles do not block each other.

Experts from the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), including Prof. Seva Ram, are consulting on the design to ensure it meets UTTIPEC guidelines. A senior PWD official stated that they are looking at solutions to eliminate bottlenecks at busy spots like AIIMS and Yusuf Sarai, which could potentially include a new flyover from INA.

Impact on daily commuters and timeline

Once approved, this project will bring relief to over 2 lakh vehicle owners who use this road every day. People living in Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, SDA Colony, and Sarvodaya Colony will see significantly less congestion outside their neighborhoods. It will also serve as a faster link for those traveling between Central Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon.

Currently, the proposal is in the advanced planning stage and is moving towards higher government approval. After the budget clearance for the 2026–27 financial year, a detailed feasibility study and project report will be commissioned to finalize the construction steps and total cost.
