Residents of Safdarjung Enclave are facing a severe health crisis due to sewage mixing with the drinking water supply. The situation has worsened in Blocks B-1, B-2, and B-3, where tap water has become completely unfit for consumption. A recent test report by the Delhi Jal Board confirmed that the water is highly contaminated, posing serious risks of diseases like Typhoid and Hepatitis.

What Does the Official Water Report Say?

The Delhi Jal Board collected samples on February 26, and the results are alarming. The report shows a coliform count of 2400 MPN/100ml in the water, whereas the safe limit for drinking water is zero. Residents have been complaining about foul-smelling and dirty water, and the official data now validates their concerns.

  • Coliform Count: 2400 MPN/100ml (Indicates high fecal contamination)
  • Turbidity: Levels reached up to 11.5 NTU in Block B-3, far above the standard limit of 1 NTU.
  • Ammonia: Found at a level of 1 mg/liter.

Broken Sewer Line Causing Financial Strain

The root cause of this contamination is a major infrastructure failure near Bhikaji Cama Place. A large 1200 mm trunk sewer line located between Africa Avenue Road and Ring Road has settled, leading to sewage leakage into potable water pipes. This problem has persisted for two years but became critical in the last three weeks.

About 5,000 people are directly affected by this crisis. Families are now forced to spend between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000 every month on private water tankers and mineral water bottles just to meet their daily needs. While the Jal Board and MCD inspected the site, residents urge immediate repairs to the damaged pipeline to restore clean supply.
