Seven workers lost their lives at an under-construction project of Signature Global in Sidhrawali village, Gurugram. The accident occurred on Monday evening between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM when a massive mound of soil and a concrete retaining wall collapsed during excavation. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into major safety lapses and an alleged attempt by the developer to conceal the scale of the tragedy by moving victims to another state.

What caused the accident and why was there a delay in reporting?

The workers were buried under nearly 30 feet of debris while working on a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at the Signature Global City of Colours site. Although the collapse happened early in the evening, the local police were not notified until 9:30 PM. Furthermore, the injured and deceased were transported to a district hospital in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, instead of a nearby facility in Gurugram. This move is currently under scrutiny by the administration as a potential attempt to delay local intervention.

What safety violations were found at the Signature Global site?

An enquiry led by Manesar SDM Darshan Yadav and the Haryana Labour Department revealed several critical violations of safety protocols. The investigation confirmed that the project site lacked basic protective measures for deep excavation. Key findings include:

  • The 30-foot deep pit lacked mandatory support systems like piling, bracing, or shoring.
  • Construction work continued despite visible signs of unstable soil in the area.
  • There were no warning boards or mandatory safety equipment provided to the workers.
  • The site did not have emergency medical support, such as a dedicated ambulance or stretchers.

Details of the legal action and casualties

The Gurugram Police have registered an FIR under BNS Sections 105 for culpable homicide and 125 for endangering life. Most of the deceased workers belonged to Jharkhand and Rajasthan, while the injured workers are reported to be from Nepal. The post-mortem reports confirmed that the deaths occurred due to asphyxiation after being buried under the soil.
