Passengers on a SpiceJet flight heading to Leh from New Delhi faced a tense situation on Tuesday morning. The flight, SG-121, had to make an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport shortly after taking off. Reports indicate that a technical issue was detected in the aircraft, forcing the pilot to turn back immediately. There were about 150 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
Why was the emergency declared?
The flight took off as scheduled, but around 6:30 AM, a full emergency was declared at the Delhi airport. The pilot noticed a potential glitch in the number 2 engine of the Boeing 737 aircraft. Keeping the safety of everyone in mind, the decision was made to perform an ‘Air Return’.
Airport authorities acted quickly, keeping ambulances and fire brigades on high alert to handle any situation. Fortunately, the plane landed safely at 6:45 AM, just 15 minutes after the emergency was announced. The airline later clarified that there was no fire warning in the cockpit, but standard safety protocols were followed strictly.
What happened to the passengers?
All 150 passengers were deboarded safely and in a normal manner after the plane touched down. No injuries or panic situations were reported. SpiceJet officials stated that an alternate aircraft was arranged to take the passengers to their destination in Leh so their travel plans would not be fully disrupted.
The technical team and engineering department have already started a detailed investigation to understand exactly what went wrong with the engine. While such incidents cause delays, following safety norms is always the priority for aviation authorities.
