How did the accident happen at Surajkund Mela?

The incident occurred on the evening of February 7, 2026, around 6:15 PM in the amusement zone of the fair. A high-speed electric swing named ‘Tsunami’ broke mid-air while carrying about 26 people. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty, rushed to save people trapped under the debris.

Unfortunately, a heavy part of the swing fell on him while he was helping others, leading to his death. He was 59 years old and was scheduled to retire in March 2026. Apart from the loss of the brave officer, 13 other people, including police personnel and civilians, were injured in this mishap.

What actions have been taken by the administration?

The police have arrested the swing owner, Mohammad Shakir, and an employee named Nitesh under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to conduct a technical probe into the equipment failure. The state government has declared Inspector Jagdish Prasad a ‘Martyr’ and announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for his family, along with a government job for one member.

The Human Rights Commission has raised serious questions about the safety certification of temporary structures at the fair. They have asked the Director General of Police and other senior officers to explain the protocols followed for safety checks. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for April 7, 2026.
