The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UP STF) arrested Maulana Abdullah Salim from the Purnia district of Bihar for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his mother. The Maulana, also known as Abdullah Salim Chaturvedi, was taken into custody following a series of police complaints across multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh. He was recently brought to Bahraich where he was produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody.

Why was the action taken against the Maulana?

The controversy started after a video clip from a religious gathering held in May 2024 in Bhagalpur, Bihar, went viral on social media. In the video, Maulana Abdullah Salim was seen using highly offensive and abusive language directed at CM Yogi Adityanath, his family, and religious symbols. Following the viral clip, several Hindu organizations and BJP workers staged protests in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, demanding immediate legal action.

Legal proceedings and current status of the case

The UP Police recorded over 80 FIRs against the Maulana in districts such as Bahraich, Balrampur, Maharajganj, and Gorakhpur. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for intentionally insulting with intent to provoke breach of peace and promoting enmity between different groups. After his arrest, Maulana Abdullah Salim issued a video statement expressing regret and seeking an unconditional apology for his previous comments. He is currently lodged in the Bahraich district jail.
